As we welcome 2020, the New Year and new decade is an incredible opportunity to take wakefulness to the next level. Maybe for you, that means changing your relationship to your body, or perhaps it is about being more conscious in your relationships. For many of us, is it about being more fully present and relaxed in our lives and our relationships: practicing mindfulness. But practicing mindfulness is no small accomplishment. Too often, our mind distracts us when the future moment finally arrives, perpetually focused on what’s coming next. Or reality kicks in when we realize that old pain doesn’t stay behind by turning a page on a calendar and instead shows up when we least want or expect it. The bottom line is if we don’t deal with the future or the past, practicing mindfulness is difficult. So in living wakefully, we dip our toe in the future or past as needed but return to living in the present time, remembering that life is always happening in the “now”. And what results is powerful and potent. Life slows down, expands, and deepens. Imagine this time next year, reflecting over the year, content that you experienced so many of the moments of the New Year fully and profoundly. That is the possibility here.
I shared my journey with mindfulness in a podcast interview this year for the show Stories that Empower. I encourage you to check it out here.
