Gestures

First, for all of you who are currently impacted by wildfires, I want to extend my love and concern for your safety and well-being. For so many, the feeling is…”now this?!”. And yet, here we are. As we face the losses, damage and continued impact, I encourage you to look towards the demonstration of love, resilience, bravery and sacrifice for others that that is also happening. Part of what heartens me and gives me hope in hard times is witnessing the powerful responses to those in need…gestures of love toward humans and animals alike. And what I have found, both personally and in my practice, is that engagement creates hope and counteracts helplessness. Big or small, our contributions matter, to the world and ultimately for our own greatest well-being. Simple gestures, like taking the time to wave or spend an extra few minutes with that stranger that looks lonely or writing a letter of gratitude to your local fire department may have just as much impact as volunteering or donating. It all counts in my book. So just when it feels like there is little energy to give or do more, you might find that your loving gesture towards another translates into a powerful and restorative gesture towards yourself.
